How to Prepare Your Child for Summer Camp
Summer camp is a great opportunity for kids to meet new people, have new experiences, and learn more about the world while in a safe environment. However, going to a sleepaway camp can be overwhelming for kids because of the change in environment and routine. To help prepare them for summer camp, try out the following tips!
- Talk About What Summer Camp is Like!
Walk your child through what the next few weeks will be like, what their temporary daily routines will be, and overall, what to expect when they arrive at the campgrounds. Ask them what they’re excited about and address any concerns and questions they may have. Providing this mental map is a good first step in mentally and emotionally preparing them for what could be their first long trip away from home. - Help Them Prepare & Pack
Preparing for camp can be a great bonding experience for parents and kids and can also help to reduce a child’s separation anxiety as they prepare to leave. The packing list camp staff send parents is a good starting point but remember to tailor the packing list to your child’s needs and preferences, including comfort items and essentials that are tailored to their interests. It’s also a great moment to let your child take charge of the preparation. Resist the urge to overpack, though!
- Create a Communication Plan
Your child will get homesick, and communication with parents can help to ease this experience. However, depending on the camp, they may not be able to call whenever they please, so manage expectations by informing your child of when they will be able to talk with loved ones at home. - Consider Your Child’s Interests When Choosing a Camp
No two summer camps are the same, and there are many sleepaway camps that focus on specific interests, such as sports or science. It’s crucial to consider your child’s interests and passions when selecting a summer camp for them. Have the websites and brochures prepared and ask your child what they’d like to do at a summer camp before signing them up. - Manage Your Child’s Expectations
There will be parts of camp your child may not like and it’s important to explain that not every day at camp will be picture perfect. Overall, camp can be a fun, challenging, and exciting experience, but sometimes rain can spoil the planned activities, or they may have a disagreement with a fellow camper. Explain to your child that these things may happen, and that’s okay! Remind them that camp counselors are there to help them overcome these moments, too.
